Sporting highlights for November and December 2016

Some of the highs of 2016 in sports.

Let us shine light on some of the great achievements our local sports personalities produced in November and December 2016:

November:

  • After an absence of five years, the Victoria Lake Rowing Club resurrected its junior section and held an open day at Germiston Lake.
  • Homestead resident, Clarissa le Roux, took her competitors by surprise when she tossed her discus into first position, at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Track and Field Championships held at the Germiston Stadium. The youngster also took silver in the u-12 shot put event.
  • Lwazi Zwane and Tshepo Mohale broke Germiston High School’s 33-year medal drought at the Gauteng Schools Rowing Championships, by coming in as the first double in the JM u-15 2x (Doubles) section. They were the highlight of the regatta, claiming gold by a boat-length ahead of St Alban’s College and St John’s College.
  • Bears Rugby League Club hammered Tuks Rugby League Club 46-18, in a fixture held at the Elspark Sports Grounds.

December:

  • Mark Strydom SA JKA Karate Centre held its Wychwood Club Championships at the Wychwood dojo, which saw their club members clinch 20 podium positions.
  • Pedro Aaron (17) earned the Male Athlete of the Year award in the secondary school category, of the Ekurhuleni North District 2016 School Sports Awards, held in Kempton Park’s Civic Centre.
