No walk in the park for these triathletes

Athletes put their fitness to the test and took on Trinity Sports’ triathlon and duathlon races.

The cloudy and windy weather didn’t stop athletes from gathering for the Trinity Sports triathlon and duathlon series, at Germiston Lake, on Sunday.

Athletes young and old and from different parts of the country all tested their endurance levels.

The participants had to transition through the race’s swim, cycle and run routes, which were all centred around Germiston Lake.

Some of the athletes used the event to prepare for upcoming races and it was also the perfect opportunity for them to improve on their personal best times.

While some were focused on improving their personal bests and reaching the finish line, others had their sights firmly set on securing podium positions.

Brad Edwards took first place in the men’s standard triathlon.

“It was a good race. The only challenges were mental, as I tried to shake off the festive season relaxation and find my rhythm throughout the race,” said Edwards.

“My advice to aspiring triathletes is to always follow your dreams, be consistent and have as much fun as possible.”

Edwards finished in 1:59:47, followed by Pieterjan van der Merwe, who finished in 2:03:16 just before Dylan Pivo, who reached the finish line in 2:03:43.

The leading female in the standard triathlon was Maude Le Roux who finished in 2:14:38.

“The race was a bit tough, but worth it,” said Le Roux.

“To all other aspiring athletes, never give up and just keep pushing throughout it all; it will be worth it in the end.”

Trailing behind Le Roux was Riana Robertson who secured the second position in 2:22:58, leaving the third podium position to be filled by Sunee Pretorius in 2:25:26.

Men’s duathlon standard:

  • Sheridan Marais – 2:13:07.
  • Glenn Macnamara – 2:13:29.
  • Nico Schoeman – 2:14:31.

Female:

  • Elisa Gianchino – 2:19:44.
  • Marilise Vermaak – 2:35:32.
  • Sarie Busek – 2:43:53.
