Sporting highlights of July and August 2016

A quick look at some of 2016’s sporting thrills.

July and August’s 2016 sports throwback.

July:

  • Different shades of colour were witnessed as the South African National Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA), held its annual National Championships at the Germiston Stadium.
  • Germiston’s first parkrun, the Victoria Lake Parkrun, was held at Germiston Lake and it was a success.
  • Nine members of Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy competed in the ISKA World Championships, in Orlando, USA. The South African team clinched top honours, with Tebbutt’s being recognised as a world class club. The club walked away with five first place, 10 second place and nine third place trophies; as well as 21 medals and full Protea colours.

August:

  • The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club were named the winners of the Senior Grand Challenge, after a hard-fought match against Randburg Diggers.
  • Shorin-Kempo Kaikan Karate Club members took first place at the Zimbabwe Full Contact Karate Tournament.
  • Nikita Coetzer (11) from Lambton, represented the Eastern Gauteng team in the Small Districts Inter-Provincial Gala at the Boksburg North Swimming Pool – and won a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke.
