Sporting highlights of March and April 2016

A quick look at some of 2016’s sporting thrills.

March and April’s 2016 sports throwback.

March:

  • Germiston Simmer Rugby Club took part in the Golden Lions Club Sevens Tournament, held in Johannesburg. The junior and senior sections managed to win seven matches out of 11.
  • The Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League saw Luso Africa Football Club’s first team trump Kempton Park Football Club 5-1.
  • Nadia Calore, a red belt holder, represented her club, Nippon Tigers Shotokan Karate Club, and achieved a silver medal for individual kata.

April:

  • Germiston Callies Harriers’ Kayla Gilbert competed at the Provincial Senior Athletics Championships, held at the Germiston Stadium. The local athlete, trained by Stephané Kotzè, took first place in the 100m hurdles and long jump events.
  • Primrose resident and visually impaired golfer, Ernst Conradie, set a new world record after he hit an impressive 7 003 balls into a target area – setting a new world record for the most golf balls hit by a visually impaired golfer in 12 hours.
  • Tebbutt’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy graded 22 of its junior members to their next belts.
  • Unique Physique’s Michael Snook (18) competed in the bench press, squat and deadlift categories of the Rhino Powerlifting qualifier. The youngster truly shone in the deadlift category, breaking a South African, as well as a world record in the event – by lifting a weight of 253.5kg.
  • Sunnyridge resident, Alessandro Trevisan (13), participated in the annual Swimming South Africa (SSA) Level 2 Regional Championships at Ellis Park Swimming Pool. Trevisan participated in eight individual events, progressing through the heat stages into five finals. He earned one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal in the 400m, 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle events, respectively.
  • Elsburg Rugby Club took on Eden Park Rugby Club and won 33-17.
