Sporting highlights for January and February 2016

A quick look at some of 2016’s sporting thrills.

It is the first month of the new year, and we greatly anticipate the events which will unfold this year.

Local sporting individuals, clubs, teams and associations scooped a number of accolades in 2016 and it is crucial for them to continue these successes in 2017.

Let us shine light on some of the great achievements our local sports personalities produced in January and February 2016:

January:

  • Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) had a good start to the year by hosting the first track and field meeting of the 2016 season, at the Germiston Stadium. Germiston Callies athletes, Kayla Gilbert, Pedro Aaron, Lemuel Klaasen and Shane Lottering, were among those competing. Gilbert won the senior women’s long jump and 100m hurdles, Aaron won the youth boys’ long jump, Klaasen won the youth boys’ 100m and 200m sprint events and Lottering won the boys’ sub-youth 100m hurdles.
  • South African golfer Brandon Stone won the BMW South African Open Championship. The championship, hosted by the metro, was held at the Glendower Golf Club.

February:

  • Christelle Grobler, a resident of Solheim, took part in the Zander Delport athletics meeting, held in Pretoria. The young athlete won the u-14 discus and shot put events and placed third in the 100m sprint. With a throw of 13.2m in the shot put and a throw of 36.9m in the discus events, she managed to break both records.
  • The VLC Night Race, hosted by the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, saw more than 120 paddlers take to the water. The race was held at Germiston Lake.
  • Germiston resident Denis Palm claimed top podium spot in the Silver Cup Eliminations at The Rock Raceway’s drifting event.
