CGA rounds out the year

The Central Gauteng Athletics recently hosted a prestigious prize-giving to honour athletes.

It’s been a long and successful year for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA).

To celebrate the year’s achievements, the organisation recently hosted its annual gala dinner at Gold Reef City Casino.

The prestigious awards honoured the provincial technical officials, coaches, administrators and most importantly athletes who’ve shone at the numerous championships hosted throughout South Africa and the world.

The president of CGA, James Moloi, kicked-off proceedings with a welcome and thanked government, corporate sponsors and the media for the contributions they’ve made in growing the sport and athletics.

He further wished all the nominees and winners good luck, as they’ve worked very hard during this Olympic year.

Some of the night’s winners included:

  • Derrick Mokaleng won most promising junior male athlete of the year.
  • Armoure le Roux won most promising junior female athlete of the year.
  • Kabelo Melamu won male junior athlete of the year.
  • Simonay Weitsz won female junior athlete of the year.
  • Alyssa Conley was named senior female athlete of the year.
  • Lebogang Shange won senior male athlete of the year once again.

One of the event’s highlights was when Joe Morris and Cecily Rootenberg were awarded presidential life time awards.

This category painted a very touching picture of individuals’ dedication to the sport.

This was clear in the case of Rootenberg, a 91-year-old woman who doesn’t just participate in race walking, but broke her age category record this year.

The CGA thanked everyone who attended the awards for their contribution to the sport and looks forward to 2017.
