Central Gauteng Athletics held a successful Sub-Youth Championships event at the Germiston Stadium, last Saturday.
Karabo Sifuthe (10), from the Orange Farm Athletics Club came first in his age group’s 80m sprint.
Athletes gathered at the Germiston Stadium for the Central Gauteng Athletics’ (CGA) Sub-Youth Championships, last Saturday.
The meeting, which is preparation for the Sub-Youth Inter Provincial Championships, saw over 800 competitors competing in various events, including high jump, long jump, sprints, shot put and javelin.
The turn-out showed the CGA that the track and field pre-season was a successful one.
“The number of athletes competing in the championships has increased since last year and the young talent showcased at the event shows great potential and development at a club level,” said Mandla Radebe on behalf of the CGA track and field commission.
A number of the Germiston Callies Harriers athletes shone at the meeting, securing finishes within the top 10 spots.
Some of their results were:
Yasmin Malan came fourth in the girls’ u-11 70m hurdles and sixth in the u-11 girls’ 80m sprint.
Keeno Mitchel came first in the u-11 boys’ 80m sprint.
Denelize Botha came first in the girls’ u-11 70m hurdles and fifth in the girls’ u-11 100m sprint.
Kaylee le Roux came seventh in the girls’ u-13 100m sprint.
Emma Shannon came second in the girls’ u-11 70m hurdles.
Lanae Marais came third in the girls’ u-13 75m hurdles.
Armant van der Linden came second in the boys’ u-13 turbojav and javelin.
Athletes will now prepare for the Sub-Youth Inter-Provincial Championships which will be taking place on November 19 in Durban.
The CGA team which will be representing the province at the Inter-Provincial Championships will be announced soon.
