Champion of Champions tournament to rock Ekurhuleni

The second instalment of the Gauteng Champion of Champions football tournament was launched in Germiston on Thursday.

Hold onto your hats, football fans, because the Gauteng Champion of Champions tournament is back.

The first edition of the tournament was played in March.

The event was officially launched at the Germiston Lapa at the Germiston Lake on Thursday, with Supersport United FC, Bidvest Wits FC and Highlands Park FC named as the three competing teams.

The three 45-minute matches will be played in a fast-paced league (round robin) format and will see the three PSL teams battling it out and accumulating points.

The concept for the tournament was born out of an idea of putting together a unique and exciting football tournament that features a large charitable element as the teams will not only be battling it out to be named Gauteng Champion of Champions, but also to raise funds for charity.

Each team pre-selects a charity before the event and, no matter where the team finishes, each charity will receive a donation.

The tournament will return to the Tsakane Stadium in Brakpan on November 13, and tickets are already on sale.

The event is not just about the football, it brings together the community, explained Philasande Muvevi, from the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

“A flea market will be held throughout the day and, instead of importing resources, we will ask local vendors to attend and sell their merchandise,” she said.

In addition, the event will host a variety of local entertainment.

Representatives from each of the teams shared their delight at being selected and look forward to facing each other on the field.
