Become part of the rugby league action

The Bears Rugby League Club is ready to continue their season.

Once one of the successful powerhouse clubs, the Bears Rugby League Club, was a force to be reckoned with, back in the day.

However, in 2012 the club closed its doors.

Then, due to a lack of clubs on the East Rand and Andries van der Merwe’s love of the game, he recently reinstated the club playing under the same name.

“I am the acting CEO of the Bears Rugby League Club and take upon all the responsibilities of team manager and club manager, as well as participating as a player,” van der Merwe said.

“After playing in Australia for a while I wanted to help the sport grow in South Africa, that’s why I decided to run the club.

“Internationally, rugby league is the biggest game and it’s my dream for it to be like that one day in South Africa.”

The club is based at the Elsburg Rugby Club, but some home fixtures are played at Bosman Stadium, in Brakpan.

They train on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The current season started on September 3 and the Bears play in the top league in the country, the Steeden Cup.

So far the club has recorded the following results this season:

  • September 3: Bears vs Potch Vikings in Potchefstroom:

The final score was Bears 48 – Vikings 22.

  • September 10: Bears vs Tuks at TUKS in Pretoria:

The final score was Bears 12 – Tuks 46.

  • September 17: Bears vs Knights at the Elspark sports grounds.

The final score was Bears 42 – Knights 26.

The season then took a back-seat due to international games and is continuing in November.

The club thank their sponsors, namely Mahestic Pools Germiston, PUB95 Primrose, Kayla’s Beauty and Hair Salon Primrose, Kick Off Pub and Grill Witfield and Unique Steel, as without them they would not be where they are today.

Special thanks goes to their main sponsor Hennie Stander from Mahestic Pools Germiston for the support he gives at every game and for being part of the rugby league culture.

New players are welcome to join the team.
