Local athletes were awarded special medals for outstanding performances at a pre-season athletics meeting.
Sunnyridge’s Lyndi Roelofse and Solheim’s Christelle Grobler took part in the NWU-Pukke athletics meeting, on October 21 and 22, in Potchefstroom.
Over 2 000 athletes between the ages of 14 and 19 participated in the meeting.
Both athletes managed to score over 1 000 performance evaluation points in their respective events and were awarded gold medals for their performances.
Roelofse competed in the u-15 1 500m and 3 000m long distance events.
She finished the 3 000m race in a time of 10 minutes and 11 seconds and finished the 1 500m race in four minutes and 36 seconds.
The long distance athlete managed to get 1 044 performance evaluation points for the 1 500m and 1 019 points for the 3 000m.
Meanwhile, Grobler competed in the u-14 shot put and discus events.
She managed to break the 14m barrier for shot put with a distance of 14.31m and scored 1 104 points.
The impressive results placed her in the top three female shot putters at the meeting between the ages of 14 and 17.
The youngster also managed to get a distance of 34.62m for discus and scored 1 044 points.
As a result of their great achievements and points, both girls were ranked in the top 30 athletes respectively.
