New home for Elsburg Boxing Academy

The Elsburg Boxing Academy encourages people of all ages interested in learning how to box to join the club.

The Elsburg Boxing Academy has started a bright new chapter.

The academy, that was formally located at the corner of Plein and Mare streets, has moved.

It can now be found at 81 Els Street, in Elsburg, and its members couldn’t be happier.

The move came about with the help of the metro, explained William Fryer, chairman of the club, who helped them locate the new premises.

In the three months since the club moved, they have made their new gym home.

“We have our floor ring setup and our punching bags; it’s starting to take shape,” said Fryer.

In addition to the new premises, the club has gained a new sponsor in Silvasons Hardware, from Primrose.

The store has, to date, sponsored the club with a number of trophies and shirts, and hopes to do more.

Asked why the business decided to support the club, Trevor Da Silva said: “We are a family-run business and believe strongly in giving back to the community.

“It means a lot to us that we can help the youth as well.”

The club practises on Monday and Wednesday nights, from 6pm to 8pm, and is encouraging all community members, from six years of age, to join its ranks and learn to box.

The academy has four trainers, namely Jan Meyer, Amanda Fryer, Martie Brits and Johnnie Brits, who are ready to help the community to reach their goals within the sport.

Heading into the new year, the club is looking forward to hosting tournaments of its own.

“We want to make our club a beacon of hope for the community,” said Fryer.

“We give a number of the young boxers somewhere to go and have fun twice a week, to forget the troubles in their everyday lives,” she added.

The Elsburg Boxing Academy is appealing to the community and businesses to help the club with sponsorship and/or donations.

It needs a number of items, including mats, gloves, head gear and clothing (red and blue kit).

“There is nothing too small; every bit helps,” said Amanda, who plans to honour all the club’s sponsors with a spot on the “sponsors’ wall”.
