Memories of boxing live on

Boxing fans, legends and professionals had a blast at the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association’s Champions Night.

The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association held their annual Champions Night, at the Primrose Bowling Club, on October 13.

“Every year, in October, we host a Champions Night where we try to not only remember, but also to honour and recognise our home-grown champions,” said the association’s public relations officer, Willie Stols.

“We shine the light on the former and current South African boxing champions.”

The association’s chairman, Nigel Pera, explained to all those present that the night is not aimed only at champions.

“This is a champions’ and challengers’ night, because, without the challengers or contenders there wouldn’t be champions,” said Pera.

“The challengers also need to be honoured, they are just as important.”

The members of the association meet every month at the Primrose Bowling Club.

“We have meetings every second Thursday of the month,” said Stols.

“We usually have a guest speaker at our meetings and, afterwards, we talk about boxing and enjoy refreshments.”

Former professional boxer Brian Mitchell was also at the event, mingling with Hekkie Budler, Pete Crous and Jimmy Abbott, among others.

The Champions Night marked the last major event for the year before the association’s year-end function, in November.
