The Janine Van Wyk (JVW) Schools League finals were held on the Germiston City Sports Grounds this weekend. Here Hoërskool Voerentoe (maroon) take on Benoni High (yellow) in the open age group quarter-finals.
The Janine Van Wyk (JVW ) Schools League came to an end this weekend.
The league, supported by Ekurhuleni Sports and Recreation, saw 109 girls’ football teams from schools around Gauteng participating in matches that ran from May to September.
The final matches were played at the Germiston City Sports Grounds, over the weekend.
A week before the play-offs, Rand Girls’ School were crowned u-17 Girls’ Champions, after losing only one match throughout the league.
The play-offs saw 28 of the top teams qualifying for the open and u-15 age groups.
The teams battled it out to reach the finals, played on Sunday.
Coaches and players took to the field in high spirits, with parents and supporters cheering them on.
The quarter-finals in the open age group saw teams from Reddam House Bedfordview, Rand Girls’ School, Pretoria Girls’ High, Jeppe Girls’, Hoërskool Vorentoe, Benoni High, Waverly Girls’ and Norkem Park battling it out for a place in the semi-finals.
Rand Girls’, Hoërskool Vorentoe, Jeppe Girls’ and Waverly Girls’ made it to the semi-finals.
But it was Jeppe Girls’ and Hoërskool Vorentoe who faced-off in the finals, with the team from Hoërskool Vorentoe winning in a penalty shoot-out.
Jeppe Girls’, Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG), Hoërskool Vorentoe, Assumption Convent, Jeppe Girls’, Reddam House Bedfordview, Benoni High and Parktown Girls’ progressed through the group stages to make it to the quarter-finals in the u-15 age group.
OWLAG, Jeppe Girls’, Hoërkool Vorentoe and Parktown Girls’ made it through to the semi-finals after a series of gruelling matches, with Jeppe Girls’ and Hoërskool Vorentoe coming out on top and progressing to the finals.
Jeppe Girls’ beat Hoërskool Vorentoe 3–0 in the nail-biting final match.
The league was a huge success.
