Unsavoury incident costs Luso league match

Luso Africa and Germiston City FC faced each other in the Germiston Derby, on Wednesday.

Bad sportsmanship and drama marred the Germiston Derby, on Wednesday night.

Germiston City FC’s last match of the Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League, against Luso Africa FC, was called off 20 minutes before the end of the second half, when a member of the crowd hit a linesman.

This meant that Germiston won the match, played at Hattingh Park, 1-0.

It was the second time the teams faced off in a Germiston Derby this season, with Luso winning their first gruelling encounter 3-2.

Luso entered the latest derby on a high and started well, with several attempts on the Germiston goal in the opening minutes of the first half.

However, the home side were unable to score and the Germiston defence were able to organise themselves and began to push back.

Germiston started to find their feet 15 minutes into the game.

A ball was cleared from Germiston’s 18-yard boxby captain Scotty Chando, who found the back of the Luso net with the help of Tiistso Molemela, who beat two Luso defenders to take his shot at goal.

Luso were on the attack for the remainder of the first half, but were met by a strong Germiston defence who never gave them the opportunity to score.

The second half started in the same way the first ended, with Luso pressuring the Germiston defence, but the visitors remained strong, holding onto the 1-0 lead.

In the 70th minute of the match, the linesman flagged a foul in favour of Germiston.

Germiston took the free kick and the game continued, while a Luso defender and the goalkeeper exchanged words with the linesman, who had awarded the preceding free kick.

Moments later the linesman walked onto the field and collapsed; it was later reported that he had been accosted by a spectator.

The referee abandoned the match following the incident, awarding the win to Germiston.

The Luso Africa FC reserve side won their match 2-0 against Germiston, with Mike Lume and Nuno De Sousa scoring the home side’s goals.
