Germiston wins second round

Germiston City Football Club’s first and second sides faced Highlands Park FC at the Germiston City Sports Club on Saturday.

Germiston City Football Club’s first and second sides played top of the league Highlands Park Football Club on Saturday.

Both fixtures were held at the Germiston City Sports Club with the first side winning 3-1 and the second side losing 2-1.

The Germiston side has had a mediocre season with a mixture of hard luck results and a heavy 0-4 defeat by Highlands in the first round fixture.

Highlands showed their intentions from the beginning with an early skirmish into the Germiston area only to be well dealt with by Mluleki Dlamini in the Germiston goal.

Germiston had an early chance by Tebogo Muso which struck the Highlands crossbar.

Germiston continued to pressurise the Highlands goal with another thunderbolt shot by Muso which brought off a brilliant save from the Highlands keeper diving to his left to tip the ball over his crossbar.

Both defences were tested and both held firm with Germiston sustaining the pressure on the Highlands goal.

With 25 minutes gone in the first half, Highlands were awarded a corner which the Germiston defence failed to deal with and the shot left Dlamini with no chance resulting in a Highlands goal.

Germiston continued to infiltrate the Highlands defence and Tunde Rufai managed to level the score for Germiston.

Germiston sustained the pressure on the opponents and with seconds left in the first half, Thabang Mfangu scored a second goal for Germiston.

Coach Sreten Pavlovich must have been pleased with his team’s performance at half-time because the Germiston side definitely came out for the second half with a spring in their strides.

Ten minutes into the second half, a good through ball by Tiisetso Molemela was latched onto by Rufai to go through and score his second and Germiston’s third goal.

Some noteworthy displays in the Germiston side were Alex Njosa, Scotty Chando and Sandile Shabangu who all put up fine performances to ensure an ecstatic win for Germiston and seriously dented the league aspirations of Highlands.

With two games remaining Germiston will face Kempton Park FC in an away game on Saturday.

The final league game of the season will be against local rivals Luso Africa FC on September 17 at Hattingh Park.
