Local paddlers are training hard for upcoming canoe marathon

Paddlers in the province are putting in lots of training for the upcoming Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.

As the weather warms up, and the Hansa Fish River A Grade Canoe Marathon draws closer, Gauteng paddlers are out in full force preparing for the big water event in Cradock.

The race is 80kms of sheer adrenaline and fun.

Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) hosted the 22km Tops Spar Klip River Race, from Daleside to Meyerton, recently, to provide an opportunity for newly registered paddlers to gain points for A Grade status.

They need points in order to participate in the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in October.

The transformation programmes in Gauteng have proved immensely successful and the winners were Siseko Ntondini (u-23, from Soweto), followed by Alex Masina (u-18, from Johannesburg South).

Members of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, based at Germiston Lake, have organised a very successful novice programme and many paddlers are busy qualifying and training new paddlers towards participation in the Fish River Canoe Marathon.

Waide and Brook Stevens, from VLC, enjoyed their race, finishing in a time of one hour and 38 minutes.
