Simmer comes out tops in semi-finals

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club played against Harlequins Rugby Club at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday.

Germiston Simmer Rugby Club’s first and second teams have progressed to the Senior Grand Challenge finals after beating Harlequins Rugby Club in the semi-finals held at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday.

The first team won 32-17 and the second team won 18-15.

The games served as the semi-finals of the Senior Grand Challenge.

In the first team game, Simmer had a fast start which resulted in attacking play where the big winger, Armand van Dyk, chipped behind the opposition backs and Christopher Khumalo latched onto a favourable bounce to score within the first five minutes.

The forwards worked tirelessly to set up a good platform for the dangerous Simmer backline and this included winning a few opposition balls in the lineouts.

However, the last league game was still fresh in the mind of Harlequins and they put a lot of pressure on the Simmer scrum in the second half.

Khumalo proceeded to score two more tries to end with a man of the match award.

The end result was a 32-17 Simmer win.

The second team had a closer game against Harlequins.

The game was a tight affair with forward play dictating the possession.

Captain Chucky Moorcroft battled to keep his troops in check as Simmer almost lost the game due to do ill-discipline.

Luckily for the home team, the final whistle blew on an 18-15 score-line.

This game saw fly-half, Brian Lee, assert his skills and receive the man of the match title.

The highlight of the game was when a backline move found big prop Stefan Stevens lurking on the wing.

He scored in the corner for Simmer much like a winger should.

Simmer’s u-20 team played an away game against the Randburg Diggers Rugby Club, in Randburg.

The u-20 team lost 42-17 to a rampant Diggers.

Simmer’s first and second teams will face Diggers in the finals.

The club wishes both teams the best of luck in the final of the Senior Grand Challenge.
