Germiston’s first parkrun a success

Community members attended Germiston’s first parkrun, the Victoria Lake Parkrun, held at Germiston Lake on Saturday.

Germiston’s first parkrun, the Victoria Lake Parkrun, was held at Germiston Lake on Saturday.

“We felt that we needed to have a parkrun in the city,” said race director Simon Treston.

“The parkrun is free and is for the community; we aim to promote fun and good health.

“This is a free run, not a race and, therefore, we don’t allow people to come and advertise or sell to make a profit.

“We want to achieve our objectives by making events informal, social runs, rather than races.

“We emphasise that it is free, as we want to remove participation barriers, and the most obstructive barrier is cost, we will never charge people to participate.

“We support the improvement of athletic standards in Germiston.”

Treston added that he was happy with the turnout.

“It is fantastic to get such a huge response from the community,” he explained.

“We welcome more people to join us, as the parkrun will take place every Saturday, from 8am, and the participants usually finish at 10am.

“You can run, walk or push a pram for a 5km distance, the choice is yours.”

Lambton’s Annette Easterhuyen was among those taking part in the outing, and said; “I love it. I used to attend other parkruns, but I am happy that there is one in Germiston now; I will be here every Saturday.”

Adding to the activities of the parkrun will be Cindy Cardy’s stretching and yoga sessions, before and after the run.

“I have a gym, Spirit Body and Sanctuary, in Webber Road, and I have decided to lead a few sessions at the parkrun,” said Cardy.

“I am waiting for confirmation from the parkrun organisers, but the plan is to lead a muscle stretching session before the run and a mild yoga session afterwards.”

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) members also took part in the run.

“Thank you to VLC for supporting this initiative,” said Treston.

“Thank you to the metro as well, as they helped us a lot with the launch of Germiston’s parkrun.

“Pieter Lotter and Clint Weimers, we appreciate your help.

“In summary, we hope to contribute to the health and social betterment of the citizens of Germiston.”
