Majorettes bring colour to the city

Ekurhuleni was well represented at the SAMCA (South African National Majorette and Cheerleading Association) Nationals drum majorettes competition, held at Germiston Stadium.

There was a riot of colour and exceptional talent during the week-long SAMCA (South African National Majorette and Cheerleading Association) national drum majorette competition, at Germiston Stadium, last week.

The best of the best from around the country competed in various sections, culminating in the elite majorettes section on Saturday.

East Rand teams dominated the elite section, showcasing the incredible talent of Ekurhuleni.

The president of SAMCA, Wayne Oberem, was thrilled with the success of the competition.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the championships, your efforts are greatly appreciated,” he said.

“A big thank you to the Gauteng Majorette and Cheerleading Association for hosting the championships this year.”

Gracing the event with her presence was Miss South Africa 2015 and former drum majorette Liesl Laurie, who said: “I miss my days of being a drum majorette, as there are a lot of things that I learnt from being a drum majorette.

“People always say that I walk into a room as if I own it, I usually tell them that among the things I learnt from majorettes is that you always walk with your head held high.

“I salute the family members and friends who are here supporting the children, because their support goes a long way, and I double salute the majorettes for being here and for fulfilling their dreams.”

The St Dominic’s senior team (located in Boksburg) successfully defended their title, winning the coveted Elite Majorettes Champion of Champions title for high schools, followed by Hottentots Holland in second and Hoërskool Eldoraigne in third.

In the primary school section, Benoni-based Rynfield Primary School lifted the trophy in the Elite Majorettes Champion of Champions title for primary schools, ahead of Groote Schuur Primary in second and St Dominic’s Junior in third.

During the course of the week, the President Majorettes competition also took place.

The President Majorettes Champion of Champions section saw Fairmont High School taking top honours in the high school section, followed by Grace Trinity School for Girls Senior in second position and JG Meiring High in third.

In the primary school section, Sacred Heart were declared the winners, followed by Brandwag Primary in second and Collingwood in third.

This was the first time in seven years the event was hosted by Gauteng and it was extremely successful.
