Close-knit fixture in Germiston

Germiston City Sports Club hosted a fixture between Germiston City Football Club and Robertsham Football Club, on Saturday.

With the second half of the season now well underway, Germiston City Football Club played against a tough Robertsham Football Club side, on Saturday.

It was a home game for Germiston, at the Germiston City Sports Club.

“Germiston had a depleted squad, as many players are away for their winter vacation, and coach Sreten Pavlovic had to piece together a makeshift side from the reserves,” said the local team’s chairman, Peter Oliver.

“Robertsham, playing the more attractive football, met with a resilient Germiston defence, with goalkeeper Benjie Kaunda called upon to make a few outstanding saves in the goalless first half.

After the kick-off for the second half, Germiston’s resilience weakened and they soon found themselves a goal down, and two goals down five minutes later.

“Pavlovic called for change and pulled off top scorer Lebogang Chokoe and replaced him with the reserve team’s Sandile Shabangu, and shortly thereafter replaced Lucky Motupi with Sibusiso Shongwe,” said Oliver.

“These substitutes sparked a rebirth in Germiston’s play and the team dominated the game from then on.

”Thabang Tjkoetcha beat the diving Robertsham ‘keeper and scored the local team’s first goal.”

Germiston’s captain, Scotty Chando, beat three Robertsham players and released a thunderbolt of a kick to bulge the back of the opponent’s net.

The fixture ended in a 2-2 draw.

The reserve team lost 0-1 to Robersham’s reserve side.

“Germiston’s high flying third side were humbly beaten in an away game against Birch Acres Football Club, to put a dent in their title aspirations,” added Oliver.
