Male athletes charging ahead

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s cross-country league athletes of different age groups produce impressive results.

Germiston-based Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) welcomed Men’s Month, July, with their sixth cross-country league on July 2.

The league was held at the Westonaria Sports Complex.

“Not even the cold was strong enough to put athletes off,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.

Ngema managed to talk to some of the aspiring athletes.

“Having done two leagues in a row and winning both of them, Sibusiso Nzima (30) is quite impressed with his performance and says he is ready for the Rio Olympic Games.”

“He confirmed this after he clocked 29 minutes and 16 seconds in the 10km event,” Ngema said.

“Based on my performance today, I am confident that I will come back with a medal from the Olympics in Rio, next month,” said Nzima.

According to Ngema, another star in the making is Rockies AC’s Samuel Mathabatha (23) who is also CGA’s 4km cross-country 2015 champion.

“Mathabatha said he aims to defend his title at this year’s SA Championships taking place in George, later this year,” she said.

“I enjoy cross-country more than any other event in athletics,” said Mathabatha.

Agreeing with Mathabatha on this is young Kabelo Seboko (17) from Lydiard AC who said: “My dream is to be a CGA junior champion and I am confident that it is possible considering I have had a great season thus far.”

“Veteran George Mooi, from Gallopers AC, won his category event and he is also excited about the upcoming CGA Championships scheduled for August,” said Ngema.

“These are men of all age groups who represent the province with utmost pride.

“Salute to all CGA male athletes this Men’s Month for continuously flying the CGA flag high.”
