Germiston abuzz with cheerleaders

The South African National Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) held its annual National Championships at the Germiston Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

Glitz, glamour and cheers were the order of the weekend at the Germiston Stadium.

Different shades of colour were witnessed as the South African National Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) held its annual National Championships.

“SAMCA is a majorette and cheerleading federation recognised by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC),” said the president of SAMCA, Wayne Oberem.

“Each year, there are championships that are held in each province and the winners of each province become eligible to compete at the national championships.

“The championships are a week-long affair, from July 2 to 9, with different categories competing on different days.”

The cheerleading heats took place on Saturday with the finals on Sunday.

“We had teams compete in the primary, high school and tertiary categories over the two days,” explained Oberem.

“We also crowned our champion of champions in each category.”

Shortly after the cheerleading finals, the opening ceremony was held for the drum majorettes’ president’s league.

“We have the president and elite league for the majorettes,” said Oberem.

“The majorettes’ heats will be held throughout the week with the elite finals taking place on Saturday.”

Oberem also said that discipline is among the important elements the athletes are taught.

“We instil discipline and due to that discipline our athletes produce good academic results.

“SAMCA’s mission, among other things, is to make a positive difference in the lives of our young people who partake in majorettes or cheerleading.

“The community is welcome to attend the championships and witness the talents, skills and discipline our athletes have.”

The top three achievers in the cheerleading categories are:

Primary schools:

  • Buccleuch
  • Roodebeeck
  • Curro Aurora All Stars

High schools:

  • Hoërskool Brandwag
  • Hoërskool Noordheuwel
  • Bryanston High

Tertiary:
