Local rugby team invited to play in Botswana

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club was recently invited to Botswana, to take part in the Gaborone Rugby and Football Club’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club were recently invited to play in the Gaborone “Gabs Hogs” Rugby and Football Club’s 40th anniversary tournament, in Gaborone, Botswana.

The tournament was held at Wharic Park, the Gabs Hogs’ home grounds.

The club’s first match saw the Black Jacks (Simmer’s old boys) facing Gaborone’s old boys.

This was a hard game as the Black Jacks didn’t have a lot of time to prepare before the tour and, though the match may have been between the club’s golden oldies, it was as fast-paced and hard-hitting as any club match.

Garth Crombie, Desmond van Niekerk, Pieter van der Westhuizen, Vernon Aub and Rene Audier were credited with outstanding performances during the match, which ended in a 40-0 defeat for Simmer.

The club’s first teams met in the main game of the tournament.

The Gab Hogs have been named the Botswana club rugby champions for the past four years.

The home side came out with a bang, running for the try-line from their own 22, at the kick-off.

Simmer’s defence responded with a number of good tackles, which allowed Wenzil Niemand to put the first points on the scoreboard for the visiting side.

The tough and fast paced match ended in a win for Simmer, with the final score at 51-0.

The team’s tries were scored by Niemand, Darrio Bezuidenhout, Anton Coetzee, Christopher Khumalo, Charl Wright, Gerrit Gertzen and Wikus Muller, with Anton Coetzee successfully converting six of the eight tries.
