Paddlers take to the river

Paddlers get ready for the river race season.

Jaco Esterhuyse, a member of the Victoria Lake Canoe Club, managed the rapids during the recent Klip River Canoe Race, building his resume to qualify as an A-grade paddler.

This was his first K1 river race and he finished the 23km race in two hours, 16 minutes.

The race was hosted by the Florida Lake Canoe Club and ran from Meyerton to Three Rivers, giving paddlers an opportunity to train for the upcoming, long A-grade races and to enable beginners/novices to gain the experience required to do those races, as well as to do the qualifying races required, for A- grade river status.

The Gauteng paddlers have started the river race season and are preparing for their first A-grade river race which takes place in October, in Cradock, on the Fish River covering a distance of 80km over two days.
