Callies runners head to the Comrades

The Germiston Callies Harriers host their annual Comrades Breakfast at the Victoria Lake Club.

The Germiston Callies Harriers athletics club celebrated their runners who will take on the Comrades Marathon, this coming Sunday, with a special breakfast.

The breakfast, on Sunday, was held at the Victoria Lake Club.

Fred Mac Dougall, chairman of the Germiston Callies Harriers, took a moment to relax before his 27th Comrades.

An impressive 50 male and 14 female runners from the club will head to Pietermaritzburg for the start of the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon.

Among them is Callies legend Alan Robb, who will be running his 43rd Comrades.

He will serve as a source of inspiration for Moshaedi Bapela, Rinah Botha, Tiisetso Dibetso, Mariaan Grobler, Gerhard Herbst, Steven Herceg, Bheki Hlatshwayo, Carolina Jacobs, Sebei Maroga, Coen Myburgh, Sibusiso Ndlovu, Sihle Ngubane, Bongithemba Peka, Carolyn Roberts and Deneho Tshabalala, all of whom are running the Comrades for the first time.

Zwelithini Vaphi from the Germiston Callies Harriers will be taking part in his 16th Comrades. He has received a silver in all his previous runs and hopes to continue with this trend this year.

Though training for the Comrades is over, runners were encouraged to take part in a fun run from the Germiston Stadium before the breakfast.
