Gruelling three-day championships action

The Athletics South Africa’s (ASA) Sub-Youth, Junior and Under-23 Championships gave athletes from across the country an opportunity to showcase their skills.

Athletics South Africa (ASA) hosted the Sub-Youth, Junior and Under-23 Championships at the Germiston Stadium, from Thursday to Saturday.

The three-day event saw athletes from across the country compete in various disciplines.

The Free State’s Tharina van der Walt smashed the National Youth Girls’ hammer throw record on Thursday, with a 61.18m launch to earn the gold medal.

Sprinter Gift Leotlela (17) was another stand-out performer with spectacular form in the u-20 men’s 100m dash, clocking 10.21 seconds in the semi-finals, just 0.02 seconds outside the SA junior record held by Akani Simbine.

“We are speechless about what happened here,” said Aleck Skhosana, the president of ASA.
