Randburg proves too strong for Germiston

Germiston City FC suffered a narrow defeat against Randburg FC, last Saturday.

In what was an extremely physical affair, Germiston City Football Club took on Randburg Football Club in an Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League clash, last Saturday.

Playing on their home turf and after their win against local rivals Olympia FC the week before, the Germiston side were ready for the Randburg game.

This coupled with the fact that key players were back in the side there was no reason Germiston could not upset their more illustrious opposition.

From the first whistle the game was definitely a two-sided affair with Germiston making the most of the early play with some good play through the midfield.

Dembi Mayimela was linking well with his forwards Chinedi Ekwemmuo and Tenda Rufai, however, the forwards’ first touch let them down and Germiston’s attacks were thwarted by Randburg.

Germiston welcomed back George Mosetlha who had been sidelined due to injury, Mosetlha strengthened the midfield as Germiston pressed for the opening goal.

With 35 minutes on the clock Germiston still had the upper hand and a neat through ball from Tsiisetso Molemelo found Lebogang Chokoe who beat the Randburg defence and slotted the ball past the diving Randburg goalkeeper Roderick Chimaikya to put Germiston in the lead at half-time.

The second half proved that football is a game of two halves.

Randburg came out of the break with a sense of pride, mounting attack after attack against Germiston.

The defence held firm with captain Scotty Chando and Alex Njoza keeping a strong defence in the centre of the field, ably assisted by some good work by Comfort Molebela on the left.

But a few minutes of concentration loss by Germiston saw Randburg equalise and then take the lead with a mix-up between Njoza and young goalkeeper Benjamin Kuanda.

Another lapse in the Germiston defence allowed Randburg to put in another goal taking their lead to 3-1.

This left the Germiston bench stunned after strong discipline had been shown until the “10 minutes of madness”.

Germiston realised they had thrown away an opportunity to make in-roads up the league ladder, however, they regrouped and with a few minutes remaining Molemelo placed a well-aimed corner onto the head of Molebela to take the score to 2-3.

The home side had a further chance to equalise in the dying moments but their shot went wide. A chance missed by the local side.

The Germiston reserve side lost 5-0 to Randburg, leaving the Germiston club frustrated.
