Kyla looks ahead to championships

Germiston Callies Harriers athlete Kyla Gilbert takes on the Athletics South Africa Night Challenge.

Germiston Callies Harriers athlete Kyla Gilbert (23) recently took part in the Athletics South Africa Night Challenge.

The meeting saw athletes from all over the country coming together to take part in both track and field events.

Gilbert placed third in the women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 14.05 seconds.

This is the first year that Gilbert will compete, purely, as a senior athlete and the GCN spoke to her to find out how she is handling the transition.

“The night challenge was good but didn’t go as well as we hoped it would,” said Gilbert.

“I am working hard and focusing on not only improving my stamina and speed but also my self-confidence.

“It is different competing only as a senior, specially having been at the top in the junior athletes.”

Gilbert trains at least six days a week and credits her sponsor, Jotta Designs, and her coach, Stephané Kotzé, on keeping her motivated.

Gilbert is looking forward to competing in the SA Championships, as well as, the remaining three meetings in the Athletics South Africa Night Challenge.
