Veterans host monthly meeting

The East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) hosts its monthly meeting with guest speaker Jan Bergman.

Members of the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) came together for the club’s monthly meeting, recently.

The members of the club meet at the Primrose Bowling Club every month, with the meeting often including a guest speaker.

“We have meetings every second Thursday of the month,” said the association’s public relations officer, Willie Stols.

Former boxing champion Jan Bergman was invited to be the guest speaker and shared his experiences both as a boxer and now as a coach.

“The dedication to be a great boxer comes from within,” he said.

“When you coach you need to find a way to inspire your boxers to find the dedication, because when they are in the ring they are on their own.”

The club was established in 1989 and it has been growing from strength to strength.

The association’s chairman, Nigel Pera, explained why the club was established, “We try to assist as many former boxers as possible,” he said.

“Among other things, we help with medical, rental, electricity and funeral costs.

“We really try to help where we can.

“We are one of the three associations in the country; there is one in Pretoria and another in Durban.

“We are actually the youngest association; the Durban group was formed in 1968 and then, years later, the one in Pretoria followed.

“On August 9, 1989, ERVBA came to life.”
