Top teams tackle it out

Simmer take on the Golden Lions Club Seven's Tournament over the weekend.

The 2016 local rugby season is fast approaching.

In preparation for the season, the Germiston Simmer Rugby Club took part in the Golden Lions Club Sevens Tournament over the weekend.

The tournament was hosted at the Pirates Rugby Club in Greenside, in Johannesburg.

The club’s u-20 (junior) team was able to beat the Alberton side to play in the plate final against the Raiders Rugby Club.

The bounce of the ball favoured Raiders and the side lost the match 5-10, with Jason Harrison named the man of the tournament in the u-20’s division.

At the end of the tournament, the Simmer u-20 team was named the sixth best sevens team in the Golden Lions Rugby Union for 2016 in their section.

The Simmer senior team made it to the semi-finals before being knocked out by the Pirates Rugby Club.

In the play-off for third place in the tournament, the Simmer senior side faced a strong Randfontein Rugby Club team and were defeated 5-41.

This result means the team is ranked the fourth best sevens team in the Golden Lions Rugby Union for 2016.

Kyle Powell was named the man of the tournament in the senior division.

Simmer now turn their focus to the league starting on April 2.

The club’s final preparation will include a friendly match against the Johannesburg Police (Bobbies) on Saturday, March 5, and a mystery trip against a mystery team on March 12.
