Juniors set to take to the water

VLC plays host to the Gauteng Canoe Union School League sprint races next Saturday.

Germiston Lake will be a hive of activity next Saturday, when the Gauteng Canoe Union School League sprint races take to the water.

Registration takes place at 8am, with the races expected to get underway at 9am.

The races this month are hosted by the Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC).

Sprints is the recognised Olympic canoe discipline and, therefore, one of the most important foundations of canoeing, which also covers marathons, rivers, surfski, canoe polo and slalom.

The Gauteng juniors are currently preparing to participate in the annual Inter-provincial Inter-school South African Sprint Championships, set to take place from March 22 to 24, at Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu-Natal.

The races accommodate all canoe club juniors, from all areas of Gauteng, including towns as far afield as Secunda, Lowveld, Pretoria and Parys, which do not have a league of their own.

The age groups are from u-8 through to 18 years.

Medals are given to the top achievers in each day’s races, in each age group, for both male and female.

Points are awarded to each finisher of the monthly races hosted for Gauteng paddlers.

These points accumulate and individuals, schools, and clubs are awarded trophies for the best achievements throughout the year, at the annual Gauteng Canoe Union School League prize-giving.
