Stay safe while training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour

ADT provides numerous ways to stay safe while cycling or preparing for a cycle race.

A disciplined approach to training for big athletics or sporting events such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour is always a good idea.

In the same way, attention should always be paid to your safety while out on the road.

Thousands of Gauteng cyclists are currently finalising their preparations for the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour by going on exercise rides.

ADT Security does, however, urge all cyclists not to neglect their personal safety measures while training.

“A good place to start is to make sure someone knows the route you are training on and when you are expected to return.

“This will help them raise the alarm immediately in case something goes wrong,” said ADT Security general manager inland region, Theunis Kotze.

“Secondly, make sure you wear bright reflective clothing that is visible to other road users.

“A reflective strip on your shoes will not be enough.

“Cycling on your own is also not recommended.

“A better option is to join a group of fellow cyclists, especially if you are tackling a longer training ride.

“Not only is there safety in numbers, but you can also support each other when you get tired,” he added.

Kotze offered the following advice for anyone taking part in any type of outdoors and athletic training:

  •  Make sure your cellphone is properly charged so that you are able to call for help in case of an emergency.
  •  Don’t use the same training route every day. Varying the route makes it difficult for any would-be criminal to anticipate your movements, while the change in scenery can also make the physical exertion more bearable for you.
  •  Leave the headphones at home. It is better to remain aware of your surroundings at all times so that you can hear any oncoming vehicles or other potential risks to your safety.
  •  Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or a taxi or even make a phone call from a payphone, if need be.
  •  If you have an alarm system at home, remember to activate it before leaving for your training ride.

Lock all the doors and gates, so that your loved ones can be safe while they wait for your return.

“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips.

“Good luck to everyone lining up for the Cycle Tour in March.

”We hope you achieve the times you set for yourself,” said Kotze.
