Track and field athletes charging ahead

Athletes show off their talents at CGA’s second track and field league meeting.

The weather in Germiston was cool when the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the second track and field league meeting of the year at the Germiston Stadium last Saturday.

“It was an action-packed half-day programme with lots of competition in both track and field events,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.

“The big guns of long distance battled it out in the 5 000m event with Tumisang Monatlala leading the bunch 30 seconds into the race, followed closely by junior man Ikageng Ggorekwe.”

However, ten minutes into the race Marco Bucarizza took the lead and maintained it all the way to the finish line.

“Bucarizza finished first in a time of 14 minutes and 42 seconds,” said Ngema.

“Keneilwe Sesing, on the other hand, led the women’s 5 000m event from start to finish.

“So far, Sesing is the strongest long distance female athlete, but we anticipate intense competition amongst the women as the season progresses.

“On the field we have aspiring high jump athletes, Matome Shabangu and Vernom Lategon, who are performing exceptionally well.

“Both athletes do, however, feel there is still room for improvement and have to work harder and focus more on training as we head towards the SA Championships in April.

“It seems 2016 will be a highly competitive season.”
