Sporting highlights for March and April 2015

A quick look at some of 2015’s sporting thrills.

Take a quick look at some of March and April’s sports achievements.

March:

St John’s Hellenic Hall, in Primrose, hosted Fighstar 11. Fight fans witnessed first-class mixed martial arts (MMA) action.
Nikita Coetzer (10), a student from Colin Mann Primary in Lambton, broke the 33m breaststroke record of 30.91 seconds (held since 2009) at the Eastern Gauteng B division inter primary schools gala.
Germiston Simmer Rugby Club participated in the Golden Lion’s annual Sevens Tournament. The local club’s seniors took home a memorable 17-5 win, making them the Plate champions.
Gauteng Fighting Championships (GFC) 7 was held at Hattingh Park.
A new football club, Liverpool Football Club Johannesburg (LFC Johannesburg), held its first open day. The club is situated on the corner of Oak Avenue and Quince Road, in Primrose.
Christelle Grobler, a pupil at Laerskool Oosterkruin, represented Ekurhuleni North (D17) in shot put and discus at the Gauteng Primary School’s Athletics Championships. She won the shot put event and was crowned the u-13 shot put champion. Grobler also took the second position for discus, and was awarded a silver medal.
Over 100 junior paddlers participated in sprint lanes, in the Gauteng Canoe Union School League Sprint Race, hosted by VLC.
Four members of the Shorin-Kempo Kaikan Karate Club, in Katlehong, attended the Shinkyokushin Karate Tournament, in Krugersdorp and received two podium positions.

April:

The Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy members took part in the Warriors Competition and managed to bring home 42 medals. The club also had 10 of its members attend the Eastern Gauteng Championships, all 10 members were named Eastern Gauteng champions.
Gauteng cyclists flocked to Emperors Palace to take part in the eighth instalment of the Emperors Palace Classic.
Boxing fans were treated to first class boxing action at the Hurricane Box and Dine Tournament, which was held at Emperors Palace.
The Delville Germiston Bowling Club hosted an Easter Weekend Bowls Tournament aimed at raising funds towards the Rhino Conservation Foundation.
Lambton’s aspiring cyclist, Callum McGillivray, took part in four events at the SA Track Championships.
