Sporting highlights for January and February 2015

A quick look at some of 2015’s sporting thrills.

Germiston Callies’ Kayla Gilbert (22) took first place in the seniors’ long jump at Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s Track and Field meeting held at the Germiston Stadium.

The New Year is only a few days away and during this time people anticipate what the year has in store for them or what they can achieve in the New Year.

While we greatly anticipate 2016’s events to unfold, let us take time to shine a light on some of 2015’s great sporting achievements.

January:

The South African Football Association (SAFA) Ekurhuleni and the Ekurhuleni Development Company (EDC), in partnership with the metro, hosted football coaching clinics for the children of Germiston and surrounding areas at the Germiston Stadium.

Germiston Callies athletes received impressive results at the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s track and field league held at the Germiston Stadium. Kayla Gilbert was placed first in the senior women’s long jump, Danie van Blerk was the first finisher in both the senior men’s 100m and 200m sprint category, Pedro Aaron got first place for long jump in the boy’s u-17 category, Megan Phillips placed first in the 100m girl’s u-19 and Lemuel Klaasen received three podium positions – first place in the boy’s u-15 long jump, second in the 100m sprint and third in the 200m.

February:

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) launched their new Novice to Fish programme.
Unique Physique Gym upgraded and moved to new premises, situated on the corner of Rietfontein and Poppy streets.
The Hansie Naude Championships saw 97 wrestlers gather at the Primrose Wrestling Club.
The Victoria Lake Rowing Club (VLC), in partnership with the metro’s sports and recreation department, hosted their 108th National Sprints Regatta.
VLC hosted their annual night race which had an increase in the number of participants.
Germiston Callies’ Kayla Gilbert became the new instructor at Hoërskool Goudrif’s gym.
Crossfit Germiston hosted an event in honour of the late Audrey Naomi Mc Cutcheon, at Lambton’s Physique Gym.
VLC paddlers participated in and successfully finished the ultimate canoe endurance marathon, the Dusi Marathon. Richard Cele finished in the prestigious 19th place overall, Gregory Smith partnered with Cape Town-based Brandon Collyer, to finish as the fourth K2 (double canoe), Roland Smith and Sandra Eardley, finished as the third mixed double (male/female combination), Collen Gibbs was the club’s next K1 (single canoe) finisher, (194th) in a time of 11 hours and 31 minutes, while the club’s safety officer, Uwe Schmidt, partnered with club-mate Neil Jackson and managed to finish in 13 hours, six minutes, as the 181st K2.
