Golfers raise funds for Jordan

Family thrilled at the success of golf day fund-raiser.

The GCN first met Jordan van der Merwe (15 months) and his parents Nicoleen and Dwyne on his first birthday (see GCN, August 28)

We have followed the family as they raise funds for Jordan to have two cochlear implants fitted.

The family managed to raise enough funds for the first implant, which was successfully turned on, on October 20, but they are still working hard to afford the second implant.

To this end, a golf day was recently held at the Germiston Golf Club, in Rand Airport Road.

The day started early, with all the ”Help Jordan Hear” helpers setting up the registration table, banners and flyers.

The players teed off at noon.

Jordan joined the festivities, so that everyone could meet the happy little man behind the fund-raiser.

Companies sponsored each of the 18 holes along the course.

The family were delighted to have Amor Vittone as MC for the night’s prize-giving, and to have Dr Duane Mol, from Union Hospital, give a talk on Jordan’s condition and why he needs the implants so desperately.

The evening included raffles and an auction, in addition to the golf day’s prize-giving.

The family thanked everyone who got involved in the day, from the management of the Germiston Golf Club and individuals who made donations, to companies that sponsored the holes and prizes, organisers and golf players, as every little bit helped Jordan to get closer to his second cochlear implant.

“A special thank you to my sister Tanya and brother-in-law Marcel Smit for arranging this wonderful, successful golf day and everyone who helped on the day,” said Nicoleen.

“Without them this golf day would not have been as great as it was.”
