Athletes honoured at awards ceremony

Athletes took off their sportswear and dressed to the nines for Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA)’s 2015 Awards.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) held their 2015 Awards, at Monte Casino, last Saturday.

“We closed the year with great success stories to tell through the awards,” said CGA’s Mbalenhle Ngema.

“An event dedicated to celebrating CGA athletes who have performed to the utmost best both nationally and internationally.

“A night of glitz and glamour got athletes out of their sportswear and into the formally elegant theme of the night.

“Vaylen Kirtley was the MC for the night.”

President of CGA James Moloi officially opened the ceremony, followed by the president of Athletics South Africa (ASA), Aleck Skhosana, who had a lot to say about the performance of the province.

Skhosana also thanked CGA for always coming out on top, even as the largest athletics province in South Africa.

“Great performances by Vincent Bones, Jojo and the Soulfonique band entertained those present,” explained Ngema.

“Our very own top athlete, Cornalia Joubert, was also among the performers, proving that her talent goes beyond just athletics.”

Category winners:

  • Most promising junior athletes of the year:
  • Simonay Weitsz.
  • Pierre Vermaak.
  • Junior athletes of the year:
  • Mpho Tladi.
  • Liza Kellerman.

“In the senior athletes of the year category, Lebo-Diana Phalula walked away with the female award for the second year in a row and exclaimed that she will be coming back for it again in 2016,” added Ngema.

“Lebogang Shange, who broke three South African records in race walking this year alone, took the senior male athlete of the year title and performed well at the IAAF World Championships.

“Selection was one of the toughest tasks to get through this year, as all nominees performed well.

“Announcing the night’s winners brought joy and pride to the province, because it also reflects on the level of talent produced by the province.

“CGA remains the home of champions.

“It has been a phenomenal year of competitive athletics.

”Thanks to our sponsors, the parents and everyone else who made these awards a success.

“We’re looking forward to yet another great year in 2016.”
