Al-Clad takes ISL honours

Football players take to the field as they finalise the league.

The Industrial Soccer League (ISL) rounded off their eight-month long league at Hattingh Park, on Saturday.

The league, registered under the South African Football Association (SAFA), comprises players from various companies from Elandsfontein and Jet Park.

“This is a league aimed at East Rand-based companies,” said the founder of ISL, William Shwayiba.

“One of the main reasons for the league is to unite companies and promote their brands through sport.”

Shwayiba said another element that contributed to the birth of the league is the aim of keeping the youth off the streets.

“The player’s ages range from 18 to 50, so, together with keeping the youngsters off the streets, we want to keep men fit and try to alleviate illnesses,” he said.

ISL is in its second year and going strong.

“This year was also a success and all the teams played well from the beginning of this year’s league,” explained Shwayiba.

“We encourage other companies from the East Rand to come and register their teams, as this is an annual league that starts in March every year.”

The audience witnessed great football action at the game between Quadrant and Al-Clad.

Although Al-Clad was leading by points prior to the game, Quadrant, put on a great performance.

Skills were witnessed in the first half, with Al-Clad players proving why they were first on the log.

Quadrant’s defence were no match for their opponents’ attack.

This was a weakness, as Al-Clad managed to make their way past Quadrant’s already fragile defence-line to score a goal.

Al-Clad managed to keep their lead.

They didn’t allow their goal to lead them to a relaxed mode and they kept pushing forward until their perseverance was rewarded with another goal in the second half.

Al-Clad won the game 2-0.

Last year’s defending champions, Quadrant, were relegated to third place, with 25 points, trailing behind Sandvik, in second place with 27 points.

Al-Clad finished second last year, only to be this year’s champions with 39 points; a 12-point lead.

“This was the last event for the year; we are taking a break until March, next year, when we’ll start with the new league,” concluded Shwayiba.
