Bouclette Top gallops to victory

Bouclette Top wins R150 000 for charity.

Bouclette Top outshone all others and raced to victory in last Saturday’s Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile.

The Alec Laird-trained racehorse, ridden by jockey Gavin Lerena, came thundering down the track from behind and won to cheers and applause from the appreciative crowd at Turffontein Racecourse.

Bouclette Top’s win was extremely special for the Thembakazi Primary Aftercare Centre, in Vosloorus, as the charity took the lion’s share of the R1-million split between the 16 charities.

Thembakazi took home a cheque for R150 000.

The win was also special for the charity’s celebrity and public representative on the day, Top Billing presenter Jonathan Boynton-Lee, and the charity’s media partner the Germiston City News.

Bouclette Top is an Argentinian-bred five-year-old gelding and Lerena was named last season’s Champion Jockey of the Year.

All 16 charities represented at the event walked away with a minimum of R50 000 each from the day.

The Charity Mile is a celebration of giving to those who need it most.

The principal of Thembakazi Primary Aftercare Centre, Zodwa Kganyago, said: “We are very excited to have won.

“We really, really need the money and have a number of projects towards which we would like to use it.

“We just need to sit down and plan everything first.”
