Great results for local wrestling club

Elsburg Wrestling Club wrestlers produce impressive results.

Elsburg Wrestling Club was represented at the South African Youth and Junior Wrestling tTournament, in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, from October 8 to 10.

Participants had to compete in teams in their respective categories.

Wrestlers from the Elsburg Wrestling Club were part of the Kwa ValUma team, that was made up of athletes from KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

Jessy van Baalen, Byron Smit, Xander de Jager and Jordon Lessing took part in the Long Term Athlete Development Programme (LTPD) on October 8.

This programme is aimed at wrestlers from u-6 to u-11.

Smit, Jessy and Lessing won all their matches.

On October 9, Carla Kruger, Lezandri Zandberg, Cheyenne Smit, Edward Lessing and Jacques Kriel, together with other team members, took part in the Greco-Roman category.

Kruger had to withdraw due to injury, but Zandberg and Smit competed in the u-17 category and received a silver medal each.

Edward Lessing and Kriel showcased their talents in the u-15 boys’ category and each received a gold medal, which also saw them achieve South African colours.

Casey van Baalen, Edward Lessing and Kriel competed in the u-15 boys’ freestyle division, while Jaco Damian competed in the u-13 category, on October 10.

Jaco and Botha were placed fifth and sixth respectively.

Edward received a bronze, Casey a silver and Kriel received a gold medal.

All in all, the Kwa ValUma team placed second overall.

In other news, Casey and Kriel have been selected for the Valke team.

The selection was the result of an analysis of their performances throughout the year.
