Children learn about the spirit of the Olympics

Olympic Day a huge success.

The metro, in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the Birchwood Hotel, hosted a successful Olympics Day, on August 30.

“South Africa’s top athletes took time off from their busy schedules just before jetting off to the Commonwealth Youth Games, in Samoa, and the All Africa Games in Brazzaville, in the Congo” said metros spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“The elite athletes enjoyed the day’s festivities with amateur athletes from within Ekurhuleni, participating in a 5km fun walk, 7.9km run and aerobic sessions.

“Olympics Day is the only annual worldwide event of the Olympic movement and serves as an ideal platform to encourage people to become more fit, by highlighting the benefits of being physically active.

“Banyana Banyana stars who represented South Africa in women’s football at the 2012 London Olympics, Refiloe Jane, Janine van Wyk and Amanda Dlamini also joined in on the day’s activities.”

Youngsters were taught about the importance of the Olympic philosophy.

“The Olympic philosophy of life combines the values of a balanced mind, will and body,” explained Gadebe.

“The children learnt that the Olympics are not just about competing for medals, but also tackling the issues of racism, and fairness, and working with communities.”
