Fitness tested at the Germiston Stadium.

Germiston Stadium recently played host to Active Ageing Games.

“The games started on May 13 and this is the regional phase where the winners will progress to the provincials to be held on September 11 in Sedibeng,” said the sport, arts, culture and recreation (SACR)’s east cluster manager, Gezephi Mbata.

“Finalists from provincials will then compete at the nationals that will take place in October, the Month of the Elderly.

“We try and keep them active throughout the year as besides these games there is the Big Walk held every year on October 4.

“These games have been running for more than ten years and we see improvement each year.”

Elderly people from age 60 and above compete in a number of sporting activities including jukskei, soccer, duck walk, ring the stick and track and field athletics.

Hosted by the Gauteng department of sport, arts, culture and recreation, the Active Ageing Games, is an initiative of the provincial government aimed at encouraging a culture of healthy living in old age through active participation in sporting and recreational activities.
