Another accolade for local club

Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy members scoops 73 medals.

Lambton’s Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy took part in NMA-ISKA’s Northern Classic Championships, in Alberton, on August 14 and 15.

“We hadn’t competed in NMA-ISKA’s competitions for four years, so we were very thrilled when we received the invitation,” said the club’s Master Alex Tebbutt.

“It was a great tournament; we had 20 of our members compete and they managed to bring home 73 medals.

“Some of the members received NMA-ISKA colours due to their impressive performances, we really are proud of all our members.”

Tebbutt also told the GCN that 11 of the members took part in the Shotokan All Style Annual Championships.

“The championships were held at the Mofolo Arts Centre, in Soweto, on August 8,” he said.

“Our athletes brought home 25 medals; this is yet another great accolade.

“I must say big ups to sensei Bongi Ndwandwe, he did a great job organising this event.

“It was also inspiring to see the president of the Soweto Karate Association, Eric Phofu, present at the event.”

The club is in full training mode, gearing up for upcoming competitions.

“We have quite a number of competitions lined up between now and December,” explained Tebbutt.

“We will be attending the Great North Two, in Brakpan, on August 29; the Development Karate Tournament on September 12, in Kempton Park; the South African Championships on October 17 and 18; Ironman on November 8 and a tournament in Centurion on November 28.

”Besides the tournaments lined up, the club is also preparing for our own annual tournament.

Our annual All Styles Tournament is scheduled to take place on October 2 and 3, in Brakpan,” said Tebbutt.

“I was unable to secure a hall in Germiston, which is why we have to host it in Brakpan.

“All clubs are welcome to register for the tournament.”
