Germiston Callies’ athletes conquer championships

Impressive results for Callies' athletes.

Germiston Callies were well represented in recent competitions.

Kayla Gilbert, Megan Phillips, Julia Lutz, Pedro Aaron and Mpho Tladi, from Callies, all headed to Bloemfontein to take part in the South African Junior Championships, recently.

“We were eagerly waiting for the championships, from the minute the athletes qualified to compete, because they gave their all during practise so, they were ready to showcase their talents,” said coach Stephané Kotzé.

“Lutz and Tladi are coached by Elize Smit, and I coach Gilbert, Aaron and Phillips.”

The athletes’ results are:

  • Gilbert – first place in the women’s u-23 100m hurdles and first place in the long jump.
  • Phillips – second place in the girls’ u-19 100m sprint.
  • Lutz – third finisher in the 200m youth girls.
  • Tladi – first in the 110m hurdles.
  • Aaron – fifth in the youth boys’ long jump.

“We are extremely proud of all the athletes, they gave it their best and did exceptionally well,” said Kotzé.

In other news, Gilbert also took part in the 2015 Senior South African Championships, on April 17 and 18, in Stellenbosch.

“Gilbert placed second in the 100m hurdles and fourth in long jump on April 17,” explained Kotzé.

“She hit a personal best of 6.29m in the long jump and missed third place by an inch, as the third winner made it in 6.31m.”

Kotzé also thanked Silvasons Hardware Building Supplies, in Primrose, as they sponsored Gilbert’s trip to Stellenbosch.”

“We wish Gilbert the best of luck in achieving her goals and dreams as an athlete; may she make all of us and herself proud in all she does,” said the sales manager of Silvasons Hardware Building Supplies, Trevor da Silva.
