Blow-by-blow action at Emperors

Explosive bouts at the Hurricane.

Boxing fans were treated to first class boxing action at the Hurricane Box and Dine Tournament, which was held at Emperors Palace, last Monday, April 13.

Presented by African Ring, in association with Golden Gloves and ChesaNyama, there were six bouts on the fight card.

The main attraction of the night saw Lungisa Jikani and Warren Joubert vying for the South African junior welterweight title.

Scheduled for 12 rounds, the fight went the full distance.

The first minutes of the first round were dedicated to analysing, as both fighters seemed dedicated to learning each other’s techniques.

More body work and shots, from both fighters, were witnessed towards the end of the round.

Contrary to the easy first round the beginning of the second round was more hyped with more punches.

It is quite evident that both Jikani and Joubert are skilled fighters as they fought with tact and accurate timing when throwing punches.

During the bout, the coaches kept encouraging their fighters to “work on the body”.

It was during the third round when real action was witnessed, with Joubert releasing several left hooks on target.

Joubert must have realised that his left hook jabs were working in his favour as they had Jikani blocking more and jabbing less.

As in all the other bouts, both fighters were energetic at the beginning of every round, but the energy seemed to fade as they eased into the round.

In the ninth round, Jikani resorted to blocking punches and retaliation throws as Joubert had him cornered.

During the last “do or die” round boxing fans were on their feet as the fighters attempted to score last minute points.

Jikani managed to put in a few accurate throws in this round.

At the end of the bout, the judges scored the fight; 118-110, 119-110 and 118-109, making Joubert the winner, by unanimous decision, and the new South African junior welterweight champion.
