Athletes head for SA Championships

Three golds for Callies.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted the last provincial track and field meeting of the season, recently.

CGA’s Track and Field Senior Championships, which were held at the Germiston Stadium, were the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the senior 2015 South African Championships, to be held on April 17 and 18, in Stellenbosch.

Among the clubs represented, Germiston Callies also had athletes scoring last minute points.

Kayla Gilbert and Danie van Blerk represented the local club in their different events.

“Kayla won the 100m hurdles in a time 13.5 seconds, and she also won the long jump in a personal best of 6.27,” said coach Stephané Kotzé.

“Danie also made us proud when he won the 200m sprint race.

“I am proud of them, they train hard and their dedication is rewarded during the competitions and trials.”

Kotzé said that all the athletes he trains do extremely well at competitions.

“Kayla and Megan Phillips also took part in the Sub-Youth Track and Field Championships, which were held two weeks back, and they won in their respective events,” he said.

“In previous competitions, as well, these athletes always put their best feet forward and excel.

“We are looking forward to the South African Junior Championships which are taking place from April 9 to 11, in Bloemfontein.

“Kayla is aiming for two golds.

“I would like to wish all athletes the best luck.”
