Enthralling fixture ends in a draw

Great football skills.

Germiston City Football Club faced Randburg Football Club on the field, on March 28.

“Randburg FC is one of the most successful clubs in the Super League,” said the local club’s communications officer, Peter Oliver.

“Their illustrious pedigree had the Germiston coaching staff worried at the kick-off of this encounter, as the young Germiston side have rarely met such tough opposition.”

Germiston started off nervously, making unforced mistakes and allowing Randburg to settle into their game.

Randburg came close to scoring in the opening 15 minutes, but, thanks to a good save from Germiston’s keeper, Brandon Greyling, the try was unsuccessful.

After the first 15 minutes Germiston felt less threatened and settled into playing better and controlled football, with fewer passes going astray.

Few chances were created by either side, with Randburg shading the possession in the first half.

Germiston entered the second half a re-energised side, taking the game with stronger counter-attacks.

Midway through the second half, Germiston stifled a Randburg attack with their centre back, Dembi Mayomela, who passed the ball through to Godfrey Chando, who passed on to Lebogang Chokoe.

Chokoe showed his skill down the left, beating three defenders in the process, and beat the Randburg keeper on the inside of his right post, to put Germiston in with 1-0.

One could feel the frustration of the Randburg players and the frustration of the bench, who became more and more vocal, intimidating the match officials.

An injury to Chando, with about 10 minutes remaining, saw Germiston making a substitution.

This caused concern for the Germiston defence, who were slightly disrupted by the substitution in their line-up.

Randburg took full advantage, beat the Germiston defence and slid in an equalising goal.

Germiston held on for a very credible 1-1 draw.

“Some noticeable performances were given by substitute central defender Prince Khumalo, Thebogo Muso, Innocent Dhlamini and Genie Sekgobela, but it was a very good team performance by the Germiston side,” said Oliver.

The league took an Easter break and the next outing will be this Saturday (April 11), with a home game against Alberton FC.

Germiston City FC’s League Three Veterans side beat Edenvale 2-1, in a Cup final played in Bedfordview, on March 25.

In other news, Germiston City Football Club are still looking for coaches for the u-10, u-13 and u-17 age groups.

Coaches who are interested, or for more information, contact Oliver on 076 431 2391.
