Members of the Elsburg Amateur Wrestling Club are excited about their recent rapid growth.
“For the past two years, the club was really struggling with the number of members,” said Jaco Kriel, the club’s chairman.
“The growth started towards the end of last year and, I must say, this year we started the year off on a good note, having new sign-ups on the day we re-opened.
“We currently have 40 wrestlers registered at the club with a few more promising sign-ups.”
Kriel also attributes the growth towards the coaches.
“We have good coaches here at the club.
“I think that is one of the strongest factors that is contributing towards the growth of the club,” he said.
“We have great men like Tobbie Alberts, Chris Sutton and Johan Lombaard coaching and sharing their experience with our youngsters, which is really great.
“They have stuck with the club through it all. We really appreciate all the work they do.”
The club committee wants to promote wrestling among the youth.
“We want to awaken this sporting code amongst youngsters and have more of them taking part in wrestling,” said the club’s secretary, Roenel de Jager.
“Hence, we are looking at promoting the sport in local schools, maybe even hosting a tournament among them.”
De Jager also said all the members are committed and focused in developing their wrestling skills.
“The wrestlers train really hard and give it their all during practice and at competitions.
“Most of our members have obtained provincial colours and we believe they will continue producing great results,” she said.
The club practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.
“We have both young and old members, and more members are welcome to join,” said Kriel.
“We have enough coaches whom are skilled and experienced to assist all members.
“We also have female wrestlers, all are welcome at the club,” he said.
