Pedalling his way to glory

Pedal-power puts McGillivray on top.

He has the Tour de France and the Kieran in Japan in his sights and, for young cycling sensation Callum McGillivray (16), this dream is sure to become a reality.

Lambton resident McGillivray is a pupil at Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston and has been cycling for two-and-a-half years.

His latest races at the Gauteng Track Provincial Championships, at Hector Norris Park, in Turffontein, over the weekend of March 14 and 15, saw him winning a string of medals in the u-16 category.

He won gold in the 1 000m Match Sprint, 2km Individual Pursuit, 500m Time Trial, 1 500m Scratch Race and in the 3km Team Pursuit.

He picked up silver in the 8km Scratch Race and in the 10km Points Race.

McGillivray trains for about 15 hours a week and rides in the Gauteng League on Saturday afternoons.

For road cycling he trains at Suikerbos Rand (which is, unfortunately, closed at the moment), on the Lido Loop and in and around Lambton.

For track racing he trains at Hector Norris Park, which is the closest velodrome to him.

McGillivray is set to take part in the South African Track Championships, from April 7 to 11, at Hector Norris Park.

He will be competing in the same events he tackled at the Gauteng Track Provincial Championships and is training hard to cycle away with medals again.

When McGillivray isn’t cycling he loves to relax by gaming (World of Warcraft and Eve Online) and also makes chainmail.
