City comes out tops during round robin

Germiston City FC's senior teams conquer warm-up tournaments.

The Germiston City Football Club Super League and Super League Reserve sides completed the pre-season by not losing a game.

Germiston City, Kempton, Edenvale and Olympia played a round robin over the weekend, with City’s first squad drawing to Edenvale 1 -1, beating Kempton Park 4-2 and beating Olympia 3-0.

Germiston topped the standings with seven points, with Kempton Park coming second.

“This was a great moral booster for City with the new Super League One starting on March 7,” said the club’s communications officer, Peter Oliver.

“Our opening game is away to Old Bens, winners of the Super League Two last season.

“Senior coaches, Len van Rooyen and Sreten Pavlovich, are very excited, saying that during the warm-up tournaments, the players showed they are up to holding their own against tough opposition.

“There is still room for improvement and as the season unfolds, the test will become tougher.”

Oliver said City’s reserves side also performed well.

“The reserves won their tournament without dropping a point, beating all three opponents and scoring ten goals and conceding two,” he said.

“Coach Pavlovich has been happy with the team’s performance throughout the tournament, he is happy with the preparation, but also acknowledges room for improvement.”

In other news, the City’s juniors have already started with training.

Training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm.

“There will be an open day on Sunday, March 8, specifically aimed at the parents to discuss taking the club forward,” explained Oliver.

“We are still looking for coaches and players, and any interested parties are welcome to join us at the open day, from 9am to noon, at the Delville Sports Ground.”
